About the Author
The short story: I have worn a lot of hats.
I have a restless mind with endless creativity and an overwhelming drive to get it all out into the world. I am a wife, a daughter, a mother, an animal lover, a day dreamer, a riding instructor, and a homemaker. I am a retired scientific researcher and an aspiring writer who now researches the deeper mysteries of life. I am a creative soul breathing in the wild Colorado air and reimagining reality into something more magical.
The longer story: I teach horseback riding lessons out of Northern Colorado where I live with my husband, two kids, and menagerie of pets (half of which have hooves). While I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, I packed up my 2-door Honda Civic and moved to Colorado when I was 18.
I never looked back.
I earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at Colorado State University in Equine science while conducting wild horse research for the USGS. (A paid position to follow a wild horse herd around the high plains of Wyoming, yes please!) I left my career when my twins were born and found myself a homemaker for many years, a decision I will never regret.
As my children grew older and more independent, and I once again found my mind overflowing with ideas, I started an Etsy shop (which is still live!) as an outlet for my creativity. My hands created what my mind could no longer contain. More recently, I began teaching horseback riding lessons on two of my older horses, watching little faces light up through the ears of a horse.
Writing, I find, weaves all of these hats together. It merges research and scientific writing with real life experiences, except with a strong douse of reimagined context. I can draw from reality, but creatively twist it into something more magical. I can look at a gas station on a corner and find 1,000 words pouring out of me as a new novel develops on a plain white page. And I can do it anywhere. With my toes dug in the sand at the beach or on my favorite rope swing in the back yard. While daydreaming in the saddle under the warm Colorado sun or with my legs folded under me on a plastic folding chair on the sidelines of one of my kids’ practices. Writing is the bridge that takes me from one point to the next.
As you may have figured out by now, I write my novels under the pen name, Della Lane. I teach little kids how to keep a horse between themselves and the ground. They look up to me. And while I am proud of every word I write; the content of my stories isn’t always appropriate for their beautifully untainted minds. So, I keep my identity hidden to separate my two worlds. Finally, in case you’re wondering: ‘Della’ is the name of the first filly I gentled and trained from the ground up. ‘Lane’ comes from my first dog, Penny Lane, who wiggled her way into my heart at a road-side dog rescue pop-up.
